Kate Mitchell – Artist Presentation

First time filmmaker Kate Mitchell is also a choreographer, sculptural couture artist, collagist, and the author of “Fashioning Women”. With GOLDEN, she turns her hand to film as a dynamic vehicle for exploring the issues of women’s empowerment in the face of cultural constraints.

For this talk Kate describes her journey into dance on screen. Here’s a sample. “For sure, I usually do things that are almost beyond my ability. They’re the projects that take over my brain and won’t relent, compelling me to pursue them, regardless of their improbability. Specific to this film: the cameras’ unique ability to convey the allure of the dreamlike place where the dancer resides, to reveal her beauty, to travel beside her intimately, to see as she sees and feel as she feels in a tactile a way, to register closely the colors,
textures, quirky objects, humor, oddity supporting the film.” Originally a professional dancer in New York, she later founded Kate Mitchell & Dancers in San Francisco. Since then, she has presented dance/theater performance events around the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Her collage and couture collections have been featured in galleries in San Francisco, Mill Valley, San Jose, and Oakland, CA. Her TERRAIN collection is currently on view at the San Jose (CA) Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Ms. Mitchell graduated from New York’s School of Performing Arts (now the Fiorello H. LaGuardia School of the Arts), holds a BA in American Studies from Yale University and an MA in Dance from UCLA.
